FDA Recalls Trasylol - Cites Increased Kidney Damage and Failures

On November 5, 2007, the FDA recalls Trasylol from the market due to seriously increased risks of kidney failure, heart attacks and strokes. The FDA recall of Trasylol stems from Dr. Dennis Mangano's latest findings, in which he concluded that 22,000 cardiac patients could have been saved if Trasylol had been taken off the market in January 2006 when his Trasylol side effects study was first published. Dr. Dennis Mangano's study found that Trasylol increased the risk of Trayslol-related kidney failure, kidney damage, Trasylol-related heart attacks, Trasylol-related strokes and death in heart bypass patients. See the Interview of Dr. Mangano on CBS News Show Report on 60 Minutes Concerning Trasylol

The Costs of Trasylol Side Effects

It is estimated that Trasylol kidney damage costs over $1 billion in health care every year. Most heart surgery patients don't know if they were given Trasylol during their open heart surgery until an investigation into their records is conducted after the Trasylol kidney damage side effects are discovered.

Bayer's Failure to Disclose Trasylol Kidney Failure Results to FDA

On September 21, 2006 the FDA's Cardiovascular and Renal Drug Advisory Committee met to evaluate current data regarding Trasylol side effects. On September 29, 2006, the FDA issued a public health advisory stating that it had new information that Bayer failed to disclose an earlier study that it had conducted involving 67,000 heart surgery patients. Preliminary review of this study suggested that Trasylol side effects included higher risks for stroke, congestive heart failure, kidney damage, and death. Bayer failed to disclose the existence of the Trasylol study during the Advisory Committee on September 21, 2006 and continued to market Trasylol for use in cardiac procedures knowing about severe Trasylol kidney failure.

Symptoms of Trasylol Kidney Failure

Kidney failure from Trasylol prevents the kidneys from functioning as they should. Kidneys filter waste and fluids from your blood and when they cease to function at normal levels or at all, they leave hazardous levels of toxins in the body. Trasylol kidney failure can occur after any cardiovascular procedure or by-pass surgery whereby Trasylol is administered and the blood vessels or kidneys are blocked. Symptoms of Trasylol kidney failure may include bleeding in the stomach or intestines, fluid retention, confusion, seizures, and in severe cases, comas. Trasylol kidney failure is a serious and potentially life threatening condition and in severe cases must be treated by dialysis. Kidney dialysis operates as an artificial means of removing waste and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys are compromised.

NOTE: Trasylol Recall Alert: On November 5, 2007  the FDA requested Bayer Pharmaceuticals Corp to suspend the further sale or use of antibleeding drug called Trasylol, amid growing concerns and strong medical evidence that Trasylol may be linked to a higher risk of kidney failure and renal failures, heart attacks, stroke and death than other antibleeding drugs used during a cardiac bypass, heart catherization or other cardiac surgery or operations.
